Amps: A Musical Platforming Symphony

Pack of Wolves

AMPS is a 2D music-based puzzle platformer by Pack of Wolves. Inspired by games 140, Sound Shapes and Geometry Wars, you control areas of the level to complete puzzles in time with the music.

AMPS went on to be shown at Dare Protoplay 2015 in Dundee. You can download and play the game here: https://pack-of-wolves.itch.io/amps

I used FMOD and Sony's PhyreEngine to implement all the audio for the game. Each level has its own unique song and as the player picks-up collectables more layers are introduced. There are also key components to the song that are attached to puzzles that you can use to complete the levels. But turning them on adds more layers and it begins to get harder to time your jumps to the puzzle as the music gets more full.

Sound effects for the game were all synthesised or created using procedural generation. This kept with the aesthetic and ensured and entirely digital world. Patches I created in Pure Data simulated the electrical noise of the player moving through the level as well.
